World Declaration and the joy of children to learn through play

The Assembly and World Congress of OMEP in Gothenburg, Sweden, in August 2010, representing seventy-two countries on five continents, we agreed that we must defend the Declaration of the Rights of the United Nations, especially the right of children to play, as well as ensure their welfare in all countries and educational programs.

Currently, due to political and economic problems, most governments are emphasizing the development of early writing skills, literacy and numeracy in our children at the primary level. This radically undermines the holistic approach to early education.

Because these policies are destroying the foundation and meaning of early childhood education. This involves the loss of core values, including creativity, imagination, open-minded and artistic expression profoundly affecting the rights and happiness of the child and the child learn through play.

We now know that the Millennium Goals of the UN to reduce poverty and give children the right to education is not achieved. So Congress and the World Assembly of OMEP implores all governments to local and national levels, to redirect its resources to put plans and goals to be achieved.

Young children are willing and able to be agents of change. Adults should listen to children, and be aware of their perspectives and ideas on issues that relate directly to them.
